Roadworks merge simulator

Lane 2 is closed ahead. See how the way drivers merge changes how many cars get through the roadworks.

Merging

Lane 2 drivers pick their own moment to move over. Fully right is a zipper merge: they stay in lane until the last 30 m, then merge in turn.

Lane 2 cars indicate when they want to merge. The lane 1 car beside or just behind decides once whether to drop back, and lets in at most one car. Lane 2 cars that have merged behave the same way.

Traffic

A fed-up grey stuck in a queue pulls out to straddle both lanes, so lane 2 cars behind can't pass. It never lets anyone in.
